Regan Smith Gateway Preview
Mooresville, NC (May 4, 2004) – After taking a short hiatus due to the
Mac Hill Motorsports team's lack of primary funding, Regan Smith will finally
get back behind the wheel of a NASCAR Busch Series machine this weekend in
the Charter 250 at Gateway International Raceway.
After having a few weeks off, Smith, who is available for other driving opportunities,
explained how he passed the time before returning to the track.
“I’ve been trying to get any other deals I can possibly get, to
fill in those races I don’t already have scheduled.”
Smith, running a partial deal with the Jack McNelly-owned #56 Chevrolet, also
has plans to substitute for Nextel Cup driver Kasey Kahne in the #38 Dodge
when scheduling conflicts arise, but is still seeking a full-time deal with
a sponsored team.
In keeping up with his #56 team, Smith made a trip to the Richmond International
Raceway on Monday, but was forced to skip out on the test session due to rain.
Originally the team hadn’t inked the Richmond event into their plans
but has since decided to make the trek to the half-mile short track for the
Funai 250 on May 14th.
Putting first things first, Smith will now head to the 1.25-mile Gateway
International Raceway. In 2003, his single showing on the Illinois track,
he grabbed a strong top 20 with a 19th place finish after starting the event
“I like Gateway. We had a really good car last year. We had a problem
on pit road which cost me two laps.”
“I’m looking forward to going there again. I don’t see why
we shouldn’t have a good run there. It reminds me of a road course by
the way it drives.”
With the weekend schedule moving to a one-day show, Smith says that may help
his effort even more.
“I don’t think it will throw us any curves. It might help out
the smaller teams a little more because everybody will work on a race run the
entire time. Nobody can work on trick qualifying runs because you race what
The 20-year-old Smith sums up his aspirations for the weekend simply by saying, “I
don’t want to leave with anything outside of the top 20.”
The Charter 250 from the Gateway International Raceway will be aired LIVE
on FX at 8:00 P.M. EST on Saturday, May 8th.
