Regan Smith Chicagoland Preview
Mooresville, NC (July 7, 2004) – This weekend second year driver Regan
Smith will make his debut on the 1.5- mile Chicagoland Speedway. Smith, piloting
the #50 Enzyte Chevrolet for Holigan Racing, has yet to make a single practice
lap on the fairly new facility.
Looking for his first start Smith says he plans on attacking the track, “Just
like I normally would, new tracks don't affect me anymore. They are kind of
cookie-cutter so you can pick them up pretty quick.”
Chicagoland has been likened to the Kansas Speedway facility, but Smith has
never driven on that track either. All in all, he says the repetitive, intermediate
tracks are all similar when it comes down to it.
“It’s like all of these other 1.5-mile tracks. From what I hear,
it’s a perfectly smooth mile and a half oval, but every track has its
own characteristics,” Smith says of the Joliet, Illinois track.
Within his first few starts under the Holigan Racing banner, Smith has tallied
the team’s best qualifying effort to date, bettering the effort two weeks
in a row at Nashville and Kentucky.
“We’re positive about that,” Smith said of the qualifying
runs. “Obviously I’m not happy because we aren’t in the top
10 - because that’s where we need to be and what everybody works for.
But, it is a drastic change from where they were at the beginning of the year.”
Other than Smith and Team Enzyte, there are 55 other teams entered in the
Tropicana Twister 300. From experienced veterans to first year rookies, Smith
and the Holigan Racing team have their hands full in order to make the field.
“It’ll be a tough race to make,” Smith said of the competition. “We’re
not going to change our plan of attack on how we do anything. If you have a
good race car, nine times out of 10 it will qualify good too.”
