Smith Looking Forward to Excitement of Talladega
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (April 22, 2008) – Although he has only one career Sprint Cup Series start at Talladega Superspeedway, Dale Earnhardt Inc. driver Regan Smith is looking forward to the fast speeds and three-wide racing that are hallmarks of the legendary track.
“There’s just something about coming to Talladega,” Smith said. “It’s the speed of the place, the side-by-side racing, the bump drafting, everything. It’s definitely not a place for the faint of heart.”
Smith, whose career-best finish at the 2.66-mile superspeedway is ninth in the October 2007 Craftsman Truck Series race, downplayed his lack of Cup experience at the track.
“I’ve raced there in all three series, so it’s not like Talladega is totally new to me,” continued the rookie of the year candidate. “The rules for Talladega are the same for everybody; stay out of trouble, try to find a good drafting partner and try to be around at the end. If you can do those things, you should have a shot at winning.”
When asked about “the big one” - the multi-car wreck that seems to occur at every Talladega race - Smith was philosophical in his answer.
“You know that one big wreck is going to happen,” Smith said. “Most of the time you’re just a victim of circumstance, so there’s no need worrying about it beforehand. All you can do is try to find a drafting partner that can pull you to the front because most of the big wrecks seem to happen mid-pack.”
