Smith, No. 01 Looking to Rebound in Atlanta

Mooresville, N.C. (Oct. 21, 2008) – After brake problems resulted in a 42nd-place finish in last week’s NASCAR Sprint Cup event in Martinsville (VA), Dale Earnhardt Inc. driver Regan Smith heads to Atlanta Motor Speedway looking to rebound in Sunday’s Pep Boys Auto 500.

“The best thing about working with this group of guys is their ability to put a bad week behind them,” Smith said. “The guys were at the shop early Monday morning getting ready for Atlanta. The amount of focus these guys have is totally amazing. Just talking with them about this weekend makes me eager to get back on the track.

“Atlanta is a great track. It’s super-fast and it’s got a number of different racing grooves on it. You’ll see guys hugging the bottom and guys running right against the wall. That leads to a lot of three-wide racing, which the fans really love. This track always seems to produce exciting finishes.”

Things have heated up for Smith and his No. 01 DEI/Principal Financial Group Chevrolet team in their battle for rookie of the year honors. Smith is currently tied with Sam Hornish Jr., 192-192, in rookie points.

“We need to have a good run on Sunday if we want to stay in the rookie title hunt,” Smith said. “Sam and his guys have come on a little bit recently, so every position is important. It looks like the title may not be decided until Homestead (Fla.). That’s okay, though. Like I said – my guys always seem to respond well when their backs are against the wall.”
