Smith Looking to Rebound in Texas

Mooresville, N.C. (Oct. 28, 2008) – After finishing 42nd and 30th in the past two NASCAR Sprint Cup events, Regan Smith hopes that Sunday’s Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway will hold better fortune for his No. 01 DEI/Principal Financial Group team.

“We’ve just struggled the last couple of week,” Smith said. “Being a rookie, you know that you are going to have some ups and downs. Most rookies struggle at this level. There’s usually a big learning curve for guys in their first year, and we’re experiencing that.

“The best thing you can do is keep learning, get some seat time and bring the car home in one piece each weekend.”

Smith once again faces the daunting task of competing at a track where he has limited Cup experience. The Dale Earnhardt Inc. driver has one previous start at the 1.5-mile speedway, in April.

“I haven’t run a ton of laps at Texas, but I am a fan of the place,” continued Smith, who has five Nationwide Series starts and two Craftsman Truck Series starts at Texas Motor Speedway.

“It’s a fast track, so you need a lot of horsepower. That hasn’t been a problem with these ECR (Earnhardt Childress Racing Technologies) engines, but you’ve got to have the handling squared away as well.  The corners at Texas can be kind of tricky, so if your car is handling properly that gives you a big advantage.”
