Early Accident Costly for Smith at Bristol

BRISTOL, Tenn. (Aug. 21, 2010) -- Regan Smith found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time and the result was a 30th-place finish in Saturday night's Sprint Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

As Smith was getting comfortable on the high-banked, half-mile oval, his No. 78 Farm American Chevrolet was collected  in a Turn 1, five-car accident on Lap 127 of 500. Smith's car suffered right-rear damage, forcing the Furniture Row Racing driver to make unscheduled pit stops to temporarily fix the problem.

The extra pit stops coupled with major aerodynamic damage to the No. 78 machine resulted in a long night of racing for Smith who finished the IRWIN Tools Night race 11 laps down.

"We were settling in and feeling good about our Farm American Chevy and then what usually happens at Bristol happened," stated Smith. "We knew going into the race that if we could avoid trouble, we would have a good chance of posting a decent finish. But our car took a good hit early and the problems just compounded from there."

The race winner was Kyle Busch. Rounding out the top-five in order were: David Reutimann, Jamie McMurray, Clint Bowyer and Kasey Kahne.

The Sprint Cup Series will have next weekend off before resuming action Sunday night, Sept. 5 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
