Driving the Farm American Chevy,
Smith Looking to Take Care of Unfinished Business in Southern California
DENVER, Colo. (Oct. 6, 2010) -- For the third time this season Regan Smith's No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Chevrolet will carry the Farm American paint scheme, which will pay tribute to the American farmer and rancher at this weekend's Pepsi Max 400 Sprint Cup race in Fontana, Calif.
"There's been plenty of excitement with our Farm American car and I look forward to driving it in Southern California, which is known for its dairy and cattle farming" said Smith. "Protecting the American farmer and rancher and our nation's food supply is a cause we at Furniture Row Racing strongly believe in and having both my mother and father grow up on a farm makes it even more special for me."
Smith is also looking to take care of some unfinished business at Auto Club Speedway, where he nearly pulled off a top-10 finish in February. As the 500-mile event was winding down at the two-mile oval, he was running in seventh-place, but a pit road miscue with 25 laps remaining proved costly as the Furniture Row Chevy finished a disappointing 19th.
'I messed that one up," said a candid Smith. "I slid through our pit stall and because of the time it took to back up the car it cost us plenty of spots in track position."
Though Smith remains disappointed about what happened in the second race of the season, he feels the overall performance that weekend at Auto Club Speedway is only one of the reasons why the team is currently feeling upbeat.
"We not only have good data about the California track, but we also seem to do our best at the mile-and-a-half and two-mile venues. I should say we're cautiously optimistic because of what happened in Kansas last week. We had a decent qualifying effort of 13th and followed that up with two solid practices on Saturday. But some of the changes we made for Sunday didn't work out and we struggled the entire race and finished 26th."
Smith added, "Each week we feel that this could be our breakout race and it's no different for this weekend. We're an improved team since we last raced at Auto Club Speedway. We're so close to taking another step in our ongoing process of becoming a weekly contender."
