Motor Speedway after being diagnosed with a concussion after the Oct. 7 race at Talladega, Ala. Regan Smith filled in for Earnhardt in Charlotte and will do so again this weekend at Kansas Speedway.
GETTING TO KNOW REGAN: Smith is a 29-year-old native of Syracuse, N.Y. He competed in his first full Sprint Cup season in 2008 driving for Dale Earnhardt Inc. That season, he won the Rookie of the Year title and became the first rookie to finish every race he started. In 2011, Smith captured his first Cup Series win at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. In 162 Cup starts, Smith has recorded one win, three top-five finishes and eight top-10s.
AT KANSAS: In five Cup starts at Kansas, Smith has recorded a career-best 24th-place result three times. He has completed 99.3 percent of all the laps he's attempted (1,331 laps of 1,340 total) at the 1.5-mile racetrack.
CHASSIS CHOICE: This weekend at Kansas, crew chief Steve Letarte and the No. 88 crew will unload Hendrick Motorsports Chassis No. 88-716. Earnhardt first raced this chassis to a seventh-place finish at Kansas in April. Earnhardt also drove this car to two top-four results at Michigan International Speedway, reaching Victory Lane there in June.
INTERMEDIATE TRACK STATS: In 77 Cup starts on intermediate (one- to two-mile) tracks, Smith has recorded one win, one top-five finish and three top-10s. He has a 22.5 average starting position and an average finishing position of 25th on these racetracks.
HENDRICK AT KANSAS: With four victories at Kansas, Hendrick Motorsports ranks first among teams all time at the 1.5-mile speedway. Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon each have two victories at Kansas to rank tied for first all-time with two other competitors. Gordon ranks first with eight top-five finishes, while Johnson ranks first with 10 top-10s and 503 laps led.
CHEVROLET AT KANSAS: Chevrolet has reached Victory Lane in seven of the 13 Cup events held at Kansas, and Hendrick Motorsports has accounted for half of those victories. Johnson scored the most recent win for Hendrick Motorsports and Chevrolet at the 1.5-mile speedway in October 2011.
