Smith Nets 11th Place in Phoenix

Regan Smith led the way for JR Motorsports with an 11th-place finish in Saturday’s Dollar General 200 at Phoenix International Raceway. In a challenging event that forced teams to keep pace with changing track conditions, Smith drove the No. 7 Chevrolet Camaro as high as sixth. After maintaining a spot in the top-10, Smith faded to 16th, but a late-race pit stop brought him to pit road for fresh tires. He leveraged the fresh rubber and made a charge that netted five positions, narrowly missing the top-10 before the race’s conclusion. The effort propelled Smith six positions in the championship standings. He is now tied for fifth.

“First, I’ve got to thank our friends at TaxSlayer. This isn’t how I expected to run in my first race with them on board. Honestly, we just missed it a little bit. We don’t have much of a notebook to work with here. We have to build that as we go and we’re going to have struggles doing that. Obviously we’re disappointed with 11th. But you have to look at the bright side. We learned a lot today that we can utilize next time we race here. We’ll just head to Las Vegas and work on making our cars faster.”
