Smith Races to Strong 6th-Place Finish at Bristol

Regan Smith’s solid sixth-place showing was the best for the two-car team of JR Motorsports in Saturday’s Jeff Foxworthy’s Grit Chips 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway. With a strong No. 7 TaxSlayer.com Chevrolet, Smith proved to be a factor from the race’s outset, quickly finding himself occupying second place. He held onto a position inside the top-six for the opening 160 laps, and after pitting under caution on lap 166, charged from fourth to second following the ensuing restart. Smith then went to work on leader Brad Keselowski, and put up a feisty challenge for the lead over the next five laps. During the exchange, the pair made minor contact in turn three and the No. 7 dropped to fifth as a result. Once mixed among pack traffic and lap cars, Smith faded to ninth, but muscled his way back to the sixth position for the finish. The effort marked his second consecutive top-10 finish this season and gained him one position in the championship standings.

Regan Smith, driver No. 7 TaxSlayer.com team
“We had a good car. We were just extremely tight in traffic. We definitely learned some things for next time. These guys did a really good job all weekend. This has been our best weekend from start-to-finish all year long. So we’re making gains and learning as a team. This is essentially a brand new team, so we’re learning as we go. Greg Ives is doing a great job, too.

“I’ve got to thank the folks at TaxSlayer. I told them we were going to get them some wins with their car this year, and we will, just not quite today. I thought I had position on Brad (Keselowski) there. I was trying to clear him and just got loose getting into the corner. If we had cleared him right there, it might have been a different race. We’ll take sixth though.”
