Smith And No. 7 Team Holding Point Heading Into Dover Chevrolet Camaro

Smith has held the Nationwide Series points lead since his victory at Talladega Superspeedway on May 4, 2013 (three races). The Cato, N.Y. native also has a consecutive top-10 streak dating back to the season’s third race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

“Personally, I love racing at Dover. It has always been one of my favorite race tracks. It sounds cliché because you hear it all the time, but Dover really is Bristol on steroids. They have very similar feels. I look forward to going there and racing. I think the speeds make it a bit intimidating. You’re just going so fast and you have the high banking. It’s also self cleaning so odds are if you make a mistake, you’re going to hit something. It’s very rare—maybe one out of a hundred times—that you’ll wreck at Dover and not tear up your racecar. It requires you to be on top of the ball all the time, not make mistakes and be smooth. With the concrete you get a different type of feel from the car. For whatever reasons, the car seems to bounce around a lot more on concrete.”

Smith has 17 starts at Dover International Speedway across NASCAR’s top-three series. The break-down includes one start in the Camping World Truck Series, six starts in the Nationwide Series and 10 at the Sprint Cup level. His best finish of 16th came in the NNS race there in 2003. Comparably in NNS competition, Smith finished 11th earlier this
year at Phoenix International Raceway, the only one-mile track the series has raced on this season.

Both Smith and teammate Kasey Kahne have posted impressive numbers in their races for JRM. In seven career starts for the team, Kahne has tallied four top-five and six top-10s, only once finishing outside the top-10. His second-place effort at Charlotte last week marks his best NNS finish of the season. Smith, who owns 11 career starts with JRM, has earned two wins (Homestead-Miami Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway), four top-fives and nine top-10 finishes.

The JR Motorsports No. 5 and 7 teams participated in a road course test at Virginia International Raceway (Alton, Va.) earlier this week in preparation for the three road-course races on the Nationwide Series schedule this summer. The teams will see action in road races at Road America (June 22), Watkins Glen International (Aug. 10) and Mid-Ohio (Aug. 17).

Through 10 races, the No. 7 team ranks second in NNS Owners Points trailing the No. 54 team by 34 points for the overall lead.
