Iowa Ahead With Smith Still Atop The Points Chevrolet Camaro

Iowa marks the fourth race that Regan Smith and the No. 7 team have held the top spot in the NASCAR Nationwide Series points standings. Smith and second-place Sam Hornish are separated by 27 points. Also, Smith used a ninth-place finish at Dover last Saturday to extend his top-10 streak to nine races, dating back to the third race of the year at Las Vegas.

“We’re looking forward to racing under the lights at Iowa this week. I don’t think any of us are under the delusion that it won’t be a hurdle for our TaxSlayer team. It’s a track that is a bit of an unknown for me and Greg (Ives, crew chief). I’ve never been there. Greg’s never been there. So when the garage opens on Friday, that will be my first time seeing the track.

“I’ve spent a big part of this week watching past races and going over the notebooks that JRM has on Iowa. Just doing the best I can to prepare myself.”

Smith and the 7 team will bring chassis No. 777 to Iowa Speedway. The team raced this chassis to a seventh-place finish at Darlington Raceway last month. The 88 team also used 777 in races at Las Vegas and Texas.

In the four short track races to date this season, JR Motorsports team cars have combined to score one top-five and four top-10 finishes with drivers Kasey Kahne and Smith. Smith’s fifth-place effort at Richmond International Raceway marks the team best.

Regan Smith will join a number of other Nationwide Series drivers in an autograph session at Iowa Speedway on Saturday, June 8, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:10 p.m. local time. The session will be located in the fan concourse under the turn four grandstands.
