Smith Extends Top-10 Streak At Iowa

Regan Smith and the team produced a seventh-place effort to lead the way for JR Motorsports in Sunday’s DuPont Pioneer 250 at Iowa Speedway. It marked his 10th-consecutive top-10 finish. Smith made himself a staple among the frontrunners after briefly fading to eighth, then charging back inside the top-five in the opening 10 laps. With a car that offered better drivability over longer runs, Smith climbed to third just prior to the 100-lap mark. The team further improved its position, in part to a two-tire stop on lap 150 that launched them to second for the restart. A door-to-door battle with Trevor Bayne for the lead ensued, and after hard contact, Smith dropped to fifth – just prior to rain showers bringing out a red-flag period. Once the rain washed most of the rubber off the track and the field restarted the race, Smith reported a loose condition on his Chevrolet that dropped him to seventh for the finish.

Regan Smith, driver No. 7 team

“We wanted more than seventh place today with our Chevy. We were really strong on that long green-flag run and it seemed the longer we ran the better the car turned. We were still loose for most of the day. After the red-flag for rain, we were just too loose there at the end to do much of anything. On a positive note, this gives us a lot of solid notes to work with when we’re back here in August.”
