Late Spin Spoils Strong Showing at Road America

Regan Smith and the No. 7 team showcased their road-racing talents in Saturday’s Johnsonville Sausage 200 at Road America. It was only Smith’s first start at the facility, but he immediately took a liking to it, skillfully driving to the sixth position in the opening six laps.

Smith became a mainstay among the top-five, and following a restart on lap 33, climbed into the second spot. He continued to pressure the 16 of Billy Johnson for the lead, before contact shuffled him back to the fifth position and then to eighth. Smith maintained the position until the chaos of road racing erupted when the 77 of Parker Kligerman made contact with the 54 car, initiating a multi-car wreck that enveloped the No. 7. Smith brought the damaged car to pit road for repairs to the front end.

After restarting 33rd, Smith drove to 25th prior to the first attempt at a green-white-checkered finish. He continued to improve and found 16th, but abrupt contact from Johnson sent Smith into a gravel trap on the final lap and relegated the team to a 32nd-place finish.

Regan Smith, driver No. 7 Chevrolet

“We knew this was going to be a challenging weekend. Greg and the guys did a great job on everything and once I got a few laps around here, it was a lot of fun. This race just ended up getting crazy at the end, but I don’t think anyone expected anything differently. I felt like I got mugged out there at the end of this race. It was really a disappointing end to what looked to be a good day. I know we took a hit in the points’ battle, but we’ll work even harder to get it back.”
