Smith Returns to Top-10 Form at Daytona

Regan Smith’s eighth-place finish in Friday night’s Subway Firecracker 250 at Daytona International Speedway led the way for the two-car team of JR Motorsports. It also marked his 12th top-10 finish of 2013. Smith quickly charged toward the front from the outset, driving the No. 7 to second in the opening laps. He held a strong hold among the top-five for much of the event, masterfully manipulating the two-car tandem draft with the Hellmann’s Centennial Chevrolet. When the bulk of the field chaotically shuffled following a restart on lap 78, Smith drifted outside the top-10 and became mired in pack traffic. He gained several positions back in the closing stages, but lacked the laps to mount a further charge.

“Our Hellmann’s team isn’t thrilled with eighth, but I’m happy to get the heck out of here with a decent finish and in one piece. The car was fast, it just got stalled in the middle on the last restart. We knew coming down to Daytona that it would be a hurdle we would have to clear and we still came out of here with the points lead. Now, we can get back to racing at tracks where we are more in control.”
