Smith Shuffled To 11th Place Finish At Iowa

Regan Smith led a season-high 59 laps in Saturday night’s U.S. Cellular 250 at Iowa Speedway before a late round of differing pit strategies shuffled his No. 7 Chevrolet to an 11th-place finish. Smith took the lead early from his second-place starting position and paced the field until Austin Dillon bypassed the No. 7 at lap 85. The pivotal moment of the night came when crew chief Greg Ives chose to give Smith two fresh tires when the leaders hit pit road at lap 201. Smith entered the pits second, but left as the fourth and final car taking only two tires. Eventual race winner Brad Keselowski and others pounced on Smith on the lap-206 restart, dropping the No. 7 to 12th by the race’s final caution at lap 223. Smith rallied to 11th after coming to pit road for four fresh tires late in the race.

Regan Smith, driver No. 7 Chevrolet
“To say we’re frustrated with the way the night ended up would be an understatement. In June, two tires was the way to go and won the race, but tonight, it just didn’t play out for us like we planned. The TaxSlayer Chevy was really strong and I felt like we were just an adjustment away from being a race winner. That’s a testament to Greg (Ives) and my guys because we weren’t very good in practice on Friday.”
