Rough Racing Unkind To Smith At Mid-Ohio

Regan Smith managed a 15th-place finish in Saturday’s Nationwide Children’s Hospital 200 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. It was a hard fought effort for Smith and the No. 7 Nationwide Children’s Hospital team, after enduring a pair of separate spins following contact during the wild 94-lap event.

Smith owned a position inside the top-10 until a bump from the 11 car sent him spinning on lap 27. Smith restarted 34th and climbed to 17th by the race’s fifth caution on lap 46. A handful of laps later, Smith hit pit road for a strategic fuel-only stop. The call handed the 7 team critical track position, and once other teams cycled though, Smith was fifth. The team’s high point in the race quickly fizzled after contact from the 30 car sent Smith spinning for a second time on lap 68. Smith emerged in 20th after the incident and struggled through one final off-track excursion which resulted in considerable cosmetic damage. But thanks to the crew’s quick repairs on pit road, Smith diligently hustled back inside the top-15 before the race’s conclusion.

Regan Smith, driver No. 7 Nationwide Children’s Hospital team
“I think we’re all glad to put these road courses behind us. It’s fun, but it throws such a wild-card into our schedule. We were really frustrated at times today, and when we made up ground, it seemed like it was just as quickly taken away. I’ve got to thank everyone on our Nationwide Children’s Hospital Chevy. The guys worked hard all weekend long, and Greg (Ives) did a good job with his calls and keeping me calm during the race, which I know can be difficult at times.”
