Cracked Wheel Dooms Smith's Efforts At Bristol

Regan Smith saw a promising run fade in the latter stages of Friday night’s Food City 250 at Bristol Motor Speedway due to a pair of mishaps that relegated the No. 7 team to a 21st-place finish. From the race’s outset, Smith and the team took a solid starting spot and immediately cut into the top five, climbing as high as third by lap 87. Under caution on lap 106, Smith hit pit road for a scheduled stop and emerged on the track in fifth for the restart. Once back to green-flag racing, Smith fell victim to a cracked wheel that brought him back to pit road under green-flag conditions, dropping the team two laps down. Misfortune found the team a second time when front-damage sent them to pit road again. The team’s strong efforts on pit road put Smith back on the track in 29th. By the race’s conclusion he vaulted himself eight more positions to 21st.

Regan Smith, driver No. 7 team

“It was such a frustrating night for our TaxSlayer team. To have a car that was as good as this, and to have such back luck, it’s disheartening. This was one of the best cars we’ve had all year and the guys did a tremendous job. But it’s time to move on now. With 10 races left, we’re going to have to be near perfect to have a shot. I will promise two things: there's zero quit in this team and this championship is far from over.”
