Smith Takes Top-10 Run in Atlanta

Regan Smith took a fifth-place start and quickly pounced on a spot among the top-three in the opening stages. For the first quarter of the race, Smith and the TaxSlayer.com team appeared strong, keeping their sights on the leaders. The No. 7 slowly drifted back to sixth as Smith diagnosed a prevalent tight condition in his Chevrolet. When competitors began hitting pit road for green-flag pit stops just prior to the halfway mark, Smith climbed to the top spot and led a lap before entering pit road himself. Once the field cycled back to its running order, Smith occupied the eighth position. The team maintained its position through another round of green-flag stops. But as the laps wound down, track changes created handling issues for most of the field and forced Smith to lose a position in the closing laps. He finished ninth.

Regan Smith, driver No. 7 TaxSlayer.com team

“We are all working hard, but there is still work to do. This team isn’t satisfied with a top-10 right now, especially with the way this championship is playing out. We can do better and we need to do better. Our race started off well, but keeping up with the track changes can be tough at times. Restarts were a bit of a struggle tonight, too. We’ll keep focused and come back stronger at Richmond.”
