Untimely Caution Spoils Smith’s Night at Charlotte

Regan Smith finished 19th to pace the JR Motorsports teams in Friday night’s Dollar General 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Smith and the Goody’s Headache Relief Shot team raced solidly among the top-10 from the drop of the green flag. The pivotal moment came under caution on lap 113 when crew chief Greg Ives called for Smith to stay out while most of his competitors hit pit road.

The strategic call gave Smith the lead and brought the No. 7 to life once the field took the restart. Smith held point for the next 28 laps, posting his fastest lap of the day and stretching his lead over second place to two seconds. The team came to pit road for its scheduled stop on lap 141 under green-flag conditions. After the stop, Smith needed the race go green, which would force other teams to pit and would cycle the 7 team back to the front of the field. Unfortunately, the race’s final caution on lap 157 annihilated Smith’s chances at a solid finish. It relegated the team to 25th. Smith rallied late to take the checkered flag in 19th.

Regan Smith, driver No. 7 Goody’s Headache Relief Shot team
“That’s the thing about pit strategies. If they work, you look like a genius. If they don’t, they can make for a long night. Unfortunately for our Goody’s team, we saw the latter. Still, I give Greg and the guys a lot of credit. We had a top-five car that we were trying to win with. The call to stay out was the right one because the car was awesome out front and in clean air. If things had played out a little differently, we very well could have ended up in victory lane.”
