Smith Races to 4th-Place Finish at Phoenix

Regan Smith posted his eighth top-five finish of the season with a fourth-place run in Saturday’s ServiceMaster 200 at Phoenix International Raceway. Smith eased his way into the top-10 early as only a first lap caution slowed the race until a second caution flew at lap 105. Crew chief Greg Ives elected to give Smith four tires under the lap-105 caution, despite many leaders choosing to take only two tires, to prepare for a fuel-only stop under the next caution at lap 130. The fuel-only stop gave Smith track position inside the top five that he’d never relinquish. In the late going, Smith ran fourth but ran out of laps to catch second and third. Smith remains third in the Nationwide Series standings heading into the season finale next weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Regan Smith, driver No. 7 team
“It was a good run. We had good speed with the TaxSlayer Chevy. We made the right calls all day. Greg (Ives) did a great job on the box. Just not quite enough to get up there with the two in front of me and then Kyle (Busch) was in a league of his own. I would’ve loved to have seen our car in clean air because we’ve been trending, here the past few weeks, to being really good in clean air and struggling a little bit in dirty air, and I was in dirty air pretty much the whole race; but nonetheless, it was a good effort. This is something we can build on coming back here next year and focusing on points next year and we’ll keep on learning.”
