Late Crash Spoils Season Finale for Smith

Regan Smith’s uncharacteristic 29th-place finish was the best for the JR Motorsports teams in Saturday’s Ford EcoBoost 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Smith’s night ended early following a fiery multi-car crash on lap 183. Prior to that point, Smith and the team put on an impressive showing. After qualifying 25th with the No. 7 Chevrolet, Smith saw methodical improvements in part to several chassis adjustments called for by crew chief Greg Ives over the course of the team’s pit stops. The changes allowed Smith to crack the top-10 after the lap-126 restart. Smith cruised as high as fourth, before hitting pit road under caution on lap 179. Ives’ earlier pit calls left the team with a set of tires while most competitors were out of their allotment. Smith pitted for the fresh rubber, and restarting 15th, was poised to make a charge back inside the top-10. However, following the restart, Smith tangled with a competitor, initiating a multi-car crash which ended the 7 team’s night.

Regan Smith, driver No. 7 team
“It was definitely a hard hit. I’m fine. It was completely my fault. I got tight and came across the nose of the 51 car. I hate that it happened and we collected some other cars in the process. I hate it for my TaxSlayer team, too. We had those fresh tires and it was time to go.

“We will use tonight to make us better for next year. This team will not settle for anything less than to be on that stage next year. I also want to congratulate Austin, his entire team and Chevrolet on the championship and a great season.”
