Regan Smith Battles For Top-10 Finish in Las Vegas

Regan Smith finished 10th in Saturday’s Boyd Gaming 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway to earn his third straight top-10 effort of the year. With the finish, Smith and the No. 7 NAPA Synthetic Motor Oil team still hold the top spot in the championship battle by three markers over Trevor Bayne.

Smith raced in the top 10 for the opening laps of the race, drifting to 12th with a prevalent loose condition. Despite giving up several positions and falling a lap down, Smith and team remained focused, twice battling back to earn the “lucky dog” award over the course of the race.

Smith cycled as high as second under green-flag pit stops, but settled to eighth as the field cycled through stops. He had a strong hold on the eighth position until the No. 7 snapped loose and made slight contact with the outside wall four laps shy of the finish. Smith limped the machine home in 10th place.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t unload as well as we wanted to. We struggled through practice trying to get the car balanced. We made big changes going into qualifying and the car felt a lot better."

“We started the race off extremely loose on exit. We had to adjust for that as soon as we could. In the process of adjusting on that, the caution came out and trapped us a lap down. We battled for the lucky dog, which we got and then had to restart toward the back. That required us to pick our way through traffic. Eventually we got up there and raced with the guys. We were just on the splitter really hard at the end of the race. Then I slapped the wall with four to go. We were fortunate to salvage 10th.”
