Smith Settles For Top-10 Finish After Late-Race Incident

Regan Smith and the No. 7 Hellmann’s team battled back from a late-race incident to land an eighth-place finish in Friday night’s ToyotaCare 250 at Richmond International Raceway.

Smith cemented a spot among the top-10 through the opening laps of the race, only briefly falling outside the top-15 around the lap-50 mark. Smith’s focus and composure paid dividends through a green-flag run, which saw him climb back to 10th on lap 85. The Hellmann’s machine then cycled as high as fourth following a pit stop under the caution flag on lap 153.

Following a restart on lap 196, the rear bumper of the No. 7 received contact from the No. 6 of Trevor Bayne. In turn, the exchange shoved Smith into the rear of Elliott Sadler in the No. 11, initiating a spin and the race’s final caution.

Smith pitted for fresh tires and lined up in 16th for the ensuing restart. He spent the remainder of the event slicing his way into the top-10, where he found the eighth spot prior to the checkered flag. It marks the team’s eighth top-10 finish in eight races this season.

It was a huge night for JR Motorsports as Smith’s teammates Kevin Harvick and Chase Elliott finished the event in the top two spots, an organizational first for the company. Harvick won in dominating fashion, leading 202 of the race’s 250 laps. Following the pair to the line were Kyle Busch, Kyle Larson and Brian Scott.

Regan Smith, driver No. 7 Hellmann’s team

“Our Hellmann’s Chevy was pretty decent tonight. We just needed the track position. That’s really important here. We had the speed and our lap times were solid, so the track position was key. We got up inside the top-five there for a time, but that restart really got us and we gave up several spots. Then it was just a matter of salvaging a good finish after the 6 got into us. Fortunately, we had enough laps left to get ourselves back inside the top-10."

“It was awesome to see Kevin get JRM another victory. That gives each of our cars at least one victory this season and that is huge for this entire team. There is a lot of effort put in by everybody back at the shop and it’s great to see it paying off.”
