Iowa Brings Top-5 For Smith

Regan Smith led the way for JR Motorsports with a third-place finish in Sunday’s Get to Know Newton 250 at Iowa Speedway, giving the 7 team back-to-back top-five finishes. Smith took a starting position of fourth and raced inside the top eight for the bulk of the race. The 7 team battled a tight race car for most of the event, but it was a key pit stop on lap 214, highlighted by an air pressure adjustment, that helped bring TaxSlayer.com / Great Clips Chevrolet to life in the closing laps.

Smith showed in seventh for the lap-219 restart and raced for three circuits until the race’s final caution slowed the field on lap 222. Smith again took the restart in seventh and immediately began a surge to the front. In two laps, he picked up three positions and found the fourth spot. He then set his sights on JRM teammate Chase Elliott and went to work on the young rookie. After a spirited battle, Smith cleared the front of Elliott’s No. 9 just enough to slide into the third spot. He continued posting solid laps times but lacked the time to make a charge at the leaders.

The finish gives Smith one top-five and one top-10 finish in three career races at Iowa Speedway and brings his consecutive top-10 streak to 10 races on the season.

“Track position is so key here. I think either one of our cars – mine or Chase’s – could have led if we could have got out front. We were just really struggling with clean air and had to fight for that all day long. I just wish we would have had the track position earlier.

“I’m happy for the TaxSlayer.com / Great Clips Chevy and all the guys at JR Motorsports. We got two cars in the top five and the other one ran in the top-10 for most of the day.
