Solid Performance at Charlotte Puts Smith Back On Top of Points

Regan Smith drove to a seventh-place finish and took control of the Nationwide Series points lead in Saturday’s History 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The effort marks his 11th-consecutive top-10 on the season.

Smith debuted a patriotic-themed Fire Alarm Services Chevrolet in the eighth spot and locked onto a position inside the top-10 for the race’s entirety. Fighting a tight condition on corner entry, Smith and the No. 7 team made enough gains on the car’s handling to climb as high as fifth prior to a caution on lap 88. Once back to green-flag racing, Smith drifted to seventh, maintaining the position until the closing laps. With two to go, he mounted an intense charge on the 20 of Matt Kenseth, but couldn’t muscle away the position before the checkered flag fell.

After misfortune relegated Smith’s JRM teammate Chase Elliott to a 37th-place finish, Smith and the 7 team’s effort gave them the series points lead for the first time in eight weeks.

Kyle Larson won the race and was followed to the line by Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick and Brian Scott.

Regan Smith, driver No. 7 Fire Alarm Services team

“It was a great effort by all the guys on this Fire Alarm team all weekend. We were fast off the truck but kind of lost the handle on it all little bit during qualifying and the race. We just struggled tight in all day and that’s not typical of these cars. We stayed with it and came out of here with a decent finish."

“I’m glad to have to points lead but personally I’m not really focused on that. It’s a long season and we’re really going to focus in on points during the final 10 races or so. That’s when it matters most.
“Just want to give a big thanks to everyone at Fire Alarm, Mercury 1 and our Servicemen and women. It was a pleasure driving the stars and stripes car on Memorial Day Weekend.”
