Smith Looking For Key To Success At Road America

No. 7 Chevrolet

Smith debuted at Road America in solid fashion in last year’s event, racing inside the top five for the bulk of the race. Eventually involved in a pair of accidents, the No. 7 team was relegated to a 32nd-place finish.  This year, finding the right balance and having good timing is likely the key to unlocking road course success.

“I think for me going to Road America, it’s going to be about trying to get some redemption. For whatever reason, I have been in the wrong places at the wrong times. I really enjoy road racing. I have not had the best of luck at it, but I enjoy doing it. The test is learning how to be in the right place at the right time and learning how to finish off one of those races. Finding that fine line between being as aggressive as other guys are, but also not going out there and going against what I believe is the proper way to race, is going to be the challenge.”

Smith and the 7 team’s streak of consecutive top-10s now stands at 13, and remains a season best among NNS competitors. Smith’s consistency has put him atop the championship standings since last month’s event at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The string of top-10’s is also the strongest start by any of JRM’s fulltime entries since its entrance into NNS competition in 2006. Additionally, Smith’s streak is three shy of JRM’s all-time consecutive top-10 high. Brad Keselowski earned 16 consecutive top-10 finishes driving for JRM in 2009.

In three starts at road courses last season with JRM, Smith netted one top-five effort at his home track of Watkins Glen International. After being taken out of contention by accidents at both Road America and Mid-Ohio, his average finish stands at 17.0 in those three events.

Of its 16 organizational victories, only one of JRM’s wins have come at a road course. The distinction is held by veteran road racer Ron Fellows, who drove the No. 5 to victory at Montreal in 2008.

JRM driver Regan Smith will participate in the NNS autograph session at Road America on Friday, June 20 from
4 p.m. – 5 p.m. local time.
