Persistence Brings Solid Effort for Smith

Regan Smith and the No. 7 TaxSlayer Bowl team again proved resilient in Saturday night’s Great Clips 300, battling their way to a sixth-place finish. The effort hands the team its 20th top 10 of the season.

Smith combated handling issues early on, but still found his way inside the top 10 by lap 33. The issues persisted, and over the course of the team’s four pit stops, the crew made gradual adjustments to help improve the handling. Smith leveraged the changes and cycled as high as fourth by lap 171. The 7 team hit pit road one final time on lap 177 in the seventh position for a strategic two-tire pit stop. The call gave Smith vital track position and dealt him fourth-place for the ensuing restart. Once back up to green-flag racing, Smith gave up a pair of positions to competitors with four fresh tires and took the checkered flag in sixth.

Smith’s JRM teammate Kevin Harvick won the race and was followed to the line by Joey Logano, Kyle Larson, Kyle Busch and Chase Elliott.

Regan Smith, driver No. 7 TaxSlayer Bowl team

“It was a total team effort by everyone on our TaxSlayer Bowl team tonight. The car didn’t fire off great in the beginning of the race, but Ryan (Pemberton) made some good calls on pit road and we just kept making it a little bit better each time. By the time we made that last run, the car was the best it had been all day. We did all we could with that last two-tire stop. Track position is so important here and I think we got all we could out of the car tonight.”
