Smith Brings Fighting Spirit To Talladega

No. 7 Hellmann’s Chevrolet

Smith and the No. 7 team roared back from misfortune at Bristol with a stellar third-place run at Richmond last week. Smith was the top-finishing NASCAR XFINITY Series regular and leaped two spots in the NXS point standings to fifth heading to Talladega.

“I love how this team has come together. I haven’t looked at the points since last week, nor will I for a few more weeks, and I guess from that standpoint it’s an uphill battle. The difference from last year to this is we have more speed in the car. Had this been last year that we had to dig out of a little bit of a hole, it would be more challenging, because we didn’t have the feel I was looking for. This year, we have both those things. We’re out there racing and chipping away at it.”

Smith knows Talladega Superspeedway very well, visiting Victory Lane in 2013 for JRM and finishing third in this race last year. That’s an average finish of 2.0 at the wheel of the No. 7 Hellmann’s Chevrolet.

On Thursday, Smith will visit the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama (CFBCA) in Birmingham to assist in packing parcels that will aid the food-insecure population of the region. Smith will be representing the Hellmann’s, Breyers and Suave Men brands in partnership with Winn-Dixie stores in the area. Nearly 250,000 food-insecure people live in the 12-county area served by the CFBCA.

Restrictor-plate racing fits Smith’s style to a tee. In seven plate races with JR Motorsports, Smith has two victories, four top-three and five top-10 finishes with 148 laps led. He’s won at both Talladega (2013) and Daytona (2014), and his average combined finish is 9.4. Taking out February’s finish at Daytona, where he was caught up in a crash, it is 6.6.

Tune in Wednesday, April 29 at 4:45 p.m. to hear Smith talk with Dave “The Godfather” Moody on the SiriusXM Radio program Speedway. While you’re at it, make sure to download Dirty Mo Radio’s JR Motorsports Upfront, the weekly podcast anchored by Smith, on or on iTunes.
