Smith Prepares For Summer Stretch

No. 7 Goody’s Chevrolet

Heading into the summer stretch of races, Smith is in solid position in the championship standings. Sitting fourth in the points, 55 out of the lead, Smith has the big picture in mind. With the July 4 race at Daytona coming up, Smith has a chance to make a move upward in the standings, so Chicagoland’s 300-miler could be a springboard to that rise.

“I’ve said all year that we have speed in our cars, and you can see that in the way we’ve been able to race. Last week at Michigan, it was frustrating, because we had the speed, but couldn’t quite get the handling to match it. We are working real hard to do that, and we’re looking to Chicagoland to get them meshed together. We’re confident that we’re on the verge of making a move in the point standings as the calendar ticks toward the halfway point.”

CHI-TOWN HUSTLE
Last time out for Smith at Chicagoland was his best finish yet on the 1.5-mile oval. Smith started 11th and finished eighth a year ago. This weekend is the first of two races on the oval in Joliet, Ill.

GOODY’S COLORS
Smith will wear the iconic blue and white Goody’s Headache Powders colors this weekend at Chicagoland. It is the first time this season for this particular paint scheme on the No. 7 Chevrolet Camaro. It is the ninth different paint scheme this season for the No. 7 team.

NUMBERS DON’T LIE
When it comes to numbers this season on 1.5-mile tracks, Smith is doing very well. In four races on 1.5-mile tracks, Smith has three top-five and four top-10 finishes. Since these tracks make up a third of the 33-race schedule, an average finish through four races of 5.0 is a significant numerical advantage for the 2014 NXS runner-up and his No. 7 team. A third at Las Vegas, fourth-place runs at Charlotte and Texas and a ninth-place finish at Atlanta speak to how much ground Jason Burdett, Smith and the team have made up on 1.5-mile tracks. Through the same four-race stretch in 2014, Smith’s average finish was 13.0
