Smith Holding Strong

No. 7 Great Clips Chevrolet

Despite two crashes that damaged his Chevrolet, Smith held on to finish 17th at Daytona last week. Heading into Kentucky he remains fourth in the NASCAR XFINITY Series points, 67 behind leader Chris Buescher.

“Our best successes this year have come on 1.5-mile and 1-mile tracks, and that’s great, because 12 of the final 18 races are on those types of tracks. Last year, we didn’t have that much success on these tracks, but this part of our program has really stepped up. Jason and the team have done a great job getting us to run better at these tracks. I look forward to this weekend’s race at Kentucky, especially since we finished top-five the last time we were there.”

GREAT CLIPS RETURNS
Smith dons the familiar Great Clips colors for this weekend’s race in Kentucky. Last time he ran the black-based multi-colored scheme was at Las Vegas in March, and he earned one of his five top-five finishes there with a third-place run.

TRENDING
In five races on 1.5-mile ovals so far this season, Smith has an average finish of 6.6, including a season-best third at Las Vegas. That’s a full seven positions better than over the same period in 2014, when he averaged 13.6. In the first five 1.5-mile races in 2015, Smith has three top-five and four top-10 finishes, compared to just three top-10s in the same period last season.

SOLID STATISTICS
The last time Smith raced at Kentucky Speedway, he finished fifth after starting 10th in the fall race. That is his only top-five there in nine starts, and he’s led 47 laps over that span. Kentucky is also a Speedway Motorsports Inc. track, and so far this season, Smith has three top-five and four top-10 runs in five starts at SMI tracks.

NIGHT TIME THE RIGHT TIME
When the lights are on, so is Smith. The New York native does some of his best work behind the wheel of the No. 7 Chevrolet Camaro when the sun goes down and so do the temperatures. In four night races so far this season, Smith has earned a third-place finish at Richmond and had fourth-place runs at both Texas and Charlotte.
