Smith Still Climbing The Ladder

No. 7 Clean Coal Chevrolet

Smith’s seventh-place run at New Hampshire Motor Speedway put him back into fourth place in the point standings, just 59 out of the top spot. The NHMS finish was Smith’s 11th top-10 in 17 races, and he was the highest-finishing car in the JR Motorsports stable there.

“I thought we had at best a fifth-place car at New Hampshire, if we could have gotten around the 18 and the 3, but I didn’t have the speed to just drive up and pass them. We had a seventh-place car, and we finished seventh with it. We just have to continue to work on finding the speed and what little bit of advantage we’ve lost over the past three or four months. We need to get that back and keep trying to work hard to close the gap in the points. We’ll go to Indy, and we have 100,000 reasons to have a good race there, try to take the money and kiss the bricks.”

BIG MONEY ON THE LINE
Regan Smith is the only driver with a chance to win the $1 million XFINITY Dash4Cash bonus after winning $100,000 at Dover earlier this year. Smith, JRM teammate Chase Elliott, series point leader Chris Buescher and Brendan Gaughan will battle for the second $100,000 check this weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He’ll have a brand-new chassis this weekend as well.

ENERGIZED
America’s Power.org/Clean Coal will be on the car this weekend at Indy, marking the company’s lone scheduled appearance on the No. 7 Chevrolet. The coal-black paint scheme is the 12th scheme to run on the team’s machine this year.

ON THE UPSWING
Smith has finished 19th and 10th in his two IMS starts for JR Motorsports. Last year, Smith led four laps on the way to his 10th-place finish. Smith also finished third at Indy in 2011 in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

SUMMER STRENGTH
Last season, Smith went on a tear beginning with the 18th race, which Indy is this year. In the following 10 races, Smith pumped out three top-five and five top-10 finishes in the midst of a heated battle for the championship. His average finish over those races was 8.1. That kind of effort could end with a championship at the end of the season.
