Seeing Red In Watkins Glen

No. 7 Chevrolet returns as Smith’s sponsor this week at Watkins Glen, the first time the iconic bright-red scheme has been on the No. 7 Chevrolet Camaro since the spring race at Bristol. In three starts so far with TaxSlayer colors, Smith has one top-five and 2 top-10 finishes.

“If I had gotten a better restart (at Iowa), we might have won that race. Our pit crew was phenomenal again, and Jason and the guys were great with adjustments all day. We are entering a segment of the schedule that I really look forward to, and we’re not in bad shape as far as the title picture goes. As a company, we’re in really good shape and we’re working hard to get closer. The way all the tempers were flaring at Iowa, we might all need boxing lessons after three road courses and Bristol!”

The runner-up finish at Iowa was Smith’s best finish of the season and keeps the mojo from Indy’s $100,000 XFINITY Dash 4 Cash payday at high boil. The second-place finish knocked 12 points off Smith’s deficit to point leader Chris Buescher and included a bonus point for leading laps at Iowa. He trails Buescher by 39 points heading into the road-racing section of the schedule.

Watkins Glen International is 78 miles from Regan Smith’s hometown of Cato, N.Y., which should be a good omen for the 31-year-old driver. In four career starts, Smith has a fourth-place finish as his best result and has been in contention for the victory each of the past two seasons with JR Motorsports.

Since coming to JRM in 2013, Smith has raced six times on road courses. His best finish is second at Mid-Ohio last season, and he has a fourth-place run at Watkins Glen in 2013. His average finish is 13.8 in those six races.

Smith’s last four NXS races have seen him finish 10th, seventh, eighth and second. In that span of races, Smith has gained 27 points on the point leader, going from 66 points in arrears after Kentucky to 39 points down after Iowa. Over the last 10 races, Smith has three top-five and six top-10 finishes.
