Smith Getting Closer To Success
No. 7 Fire Alarm Services Chevrolet
With the third-place run at Kentucky, Smith is now just 47 points out of the lead heading into Dover with six races left to run. While he still has ground to make up, he’s closer than he’s been at any point since before Watkins Glen last month, and he’s 61 points ahead of fifth place.
“Last time we were at Dover, we finished third and we left with $100,000 thanks to XFINITY’s Dash4Cash program. I like running at Dover, and we finished third at Kentucky last week, so this is a chance to get some more momentum for the stretch run. We’ll have Fire Alarm Services on the car this week, and we are looking forward to giving them a good run as well as gain some more points toward the championship. The way we finished at Dover in June, we were battling at the front and that’s where we need to be.”
FIRE ALARM COLORS
Smith will have the neon green colors of Fire Alarm Services on his JRM Chevrolet Camaro this weekend at Dover, it’s second of two primary races in 2015. A partner of JR Motorsports since 2013, Fire Alarm is based in Denver, Colo., and serves customers as a single provider for all their fire alarm, electrical, security and fire-suppression needs.
Smith was right in the middle of the lead battle last week at Kentucky, restarting third on the final green-white-checkered. He finished there, his eighth top-five result of the season and 21st top-10 finish. That makes 11 top- 10s in the last 12 races, and his consecutive top-10 streak is now seven races. The average finish for the 32-year-old driver over the last 10 races is 7.7.
In three races so far this season on tracks of 1.0 miles, Smith’s average finish is 6.3. He was ninth at Phoenix, third at Dover and seventh at New Hampshire. His eight top-five finishes this season have come on tracks measuring 1.5 miles (four), 1-mile (one) .875 miles (one), .75 miles (one) and 2.438 miles (one).
Smith’s performance on 1.5-mile tracks this season is markedly better than it was in 2014. Over the first eight races on such speedways in 2014, Smith averaged 10.9 per finish. Over the eight races so far this season, his average is 6.9. Four 1.5-mile tracks are on the schedule over the final five races.
