Smith Looking For Finale Success In Homestead-Miami

No. 7 Chevrolet

Just 24 points separate Regan Smith from his first NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS) championship this weekend. After a seven-point gain at Phoenix, he trails leader Chris Buescher, teammate Chase Elliott and rival Ty Dillon. The top four are all within 24 points, so the battle is still undecided.

“We gained points at Phoenix, but not enough. This weekend, we’re going to have to get max points and let the rest of the chips land where they land. For where we were after Daytona, and through the ups and downs of the past 32 races, to have a chance at the championship is all that matters. It will take some doing, but stranger things have happened at times like these. We have had a lot of success in the 99 starts I’ve had at JRM, and we’re looking forward to making No. 100 match up with No. 1, which was a victory at Homestead-Miami Speedway.”

Smith will make his 100th career start for JR Motorsports at Homestead-Miami…the same place he made his first for the team in 2012. In that race, Smith took the lead for good on a restart at lap 179 and held on through two restarts over 22 laps to earn his first career NXS victory. He joined the team full-time for the 2013 season, and combined with his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory at Darlington in 2011, has won races in five straight seasons at the top levels of NASCAR competition.

In addition to having won at Homestead in 2012, Smith has run very well on 1.5-mile ovals this season. In 11 starts, he has six top-five and 10 top-10 finishes, including two thirds, two fourths and two fifths. His average finish on 1.5-mile tracks in 2015 is 6.3, best among the title contenders. Ty Dillon (6.9), Buescher (8.4) and Elliott (8.6) all lag behind Smith in top-five finishes as well.

It’s all cut-and-dried from here. Smith has to finish ahead of three drivers with the proper number of points attached to win the title. He is the only one of the four to have won at Homestead and has the best performance coming in (12 straight finishes of 10th or better), including the second of his season victories at Dover and four additional top-five results.
